The international “Lessingtage” festival held at the Thalia Theatre has been an integral part of Hamburg’s cultural scene since 2010. From the festival’s earliest days, the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS has been the largest private sponsor. In addition, the foundation has since the 2019/20 season also supported the program series “Thalia International”. With a focus on international theater, the program sees an increasing number of top-level productions from other European countries staged in Hamburg, examples being Kirill Serebrennikov’s “Barocco”, “Drive your Plow over the Bones of the Dead”, by Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk, and Bernard-Marie Koltè’s “In the Solitude of Cotton Fields”, starring John Malkovich. In order to provide the audience with the best possible experience, the theater offers a pre-performance talk shortly before each guest production. These sessions share insights on the plot and the work and discuss the play’s selection and creative development. As a further indication of the internationality of the theater, selected productions are also accompanied by surtitles, for example in English, Russian or Turkish, thereby overcoming potential language barriers.
