With the magazine “Rural Futures”, the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS is breaking new ground in the field of science communication. The magazine, published in September 2023, presents the perspectives of 30 international scholars, practitioners and local actors who are conducting research on the countryside. The effort recognizes that the interplay of urban influence and rural areas is one of the key developing fields for civil society. In the view of ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, it is exactly here where we find possibilities to create new space and provide individuals with orientation.
In cooperation with committed partners – the Royal Danish Embassy in Berlin, the Center for Rural Research of the University of Southern Denmark in Esbjerg, the island of Fehmarn, the Academy Centre Sankelmark and the digital platform for building culture THE LINK – a series of workshops and a summer school addressing future issues in rural areas were held in 2021 and 2022, thereby forming the basis of the magazine’s content. The common goal of the endeavor was to challenge the polarized image of a rural-urban divide and to shed light on the diversity encountered in rural areas.
The magazine also represents a new attempt to compile and communicate the results and findings of scientific inquiry – the authors present their knowledge and thoughts in short texts that can be easily understood and that feature images and illustrations.
